Café-tal Apan is a business that began in 2003 as a small shop located in the heart of Coatepec, Veracruz, one of Mexico’s best coffee-growing areas. The Golden Bean generated great economic growth and it received great recognition for decades. But, it declined at the end of the 20th century due to causes such as decreasing prices, which made farmers lose interest in their product and neglect their crops. In light of this situation, we feel committed to motivate coffee growers, so that the quality of our country’s coffee may be considered among the best in the world once more.
From the beginning, Café-tal Apan has been concerned about the well-being of the people. Our philosophy is to encourage small production, marketing, and the culture of drinking coffee inside Mexico. With this purpose, we support producers by paying them a Fair Price higher than the market price, which translates into first-rate beans. This is a joint project: us who, as a business, collect and process the coffee, and the coffee growers who share our vision and help us by keeping their plantations in an environment-friendly way. Thus, our coffee has been number one in the region since 2008.
We are lucky to live in a country that has a large and unique biodiversity, and we should all be responsible for its preservation. In Café-tal Apan, we do our bit by becoming aware of the importance of protecting and taking care of the environment, the ecosystem of the farms, and all the plant and animal species that live there. This way, we have accomplished our mission, vision, and values over time by respecting nature above all else.
In this context, one of the main river pollutants is the residue from the water used in coffee washing. To prevent this, we have a natural treatment plant that regulates the pH of waste water, making it suitable for irrigation. Likewise, we turn the pulp that remains from the washing process into compost and use it as fertilizer for coffee trees. With this example, we simulate the cyclic manner in which nature works, becoming more self-sufficient and less predatory.
At Café-tal Apan, we are socially committed to the coffee growers and we support them by practicing Fair Trade, paying a higher price for the beans than that of the market. In this way, we encourage them to keep their farms and look after their crops. With this mission, we try to benefit them, the community, and our customers through the promotion of Responsible Consumption of healthy products that are home-grown and home-made.
